Kikis Avalos, Morais Lee and Top Goalscorers Shine in Heartland Conference 2024 season

The 2024 Heartland Conference Division 1 season saw some remarkable performances, with Chicago House AC‘s Ricardo ‘Kikis’ Avalos standing out as the top goalscorer. For the second consecutive year, Avalos claimed the prestigious Bob Gansler Sr. Golden Boot Award, netting 8 goals throughout the season. His consistent scoring played a crucial role in Chicago House AC’s attack, making him an indispensable asset to his team.

In a heartfelt message, Avalos expressed his gratitude:

“I would just like to say thank you to my family and fans for supporting us throughout the season. Most importantly, the coaching staff and my teammates that pushed me to be better every day at practice and games. Without my teammates’ hard work, none of my goals would have happened. So, this award is a reflection of my teammates’ daily hard work that helped me earn this award.

Our season went pretty well, with lots of things we can take out and learn from. We went through several changes throughout the season, but I am very proud of how the team stuck together, stayed disciplined, and fought for the badge every single game. We had an opportunity to win the title, but things did not go our way. That is something to look forward to for next season. I am not sure where I will be next season, but we shall see… #Upthehouse.”

Avalos was not the only player to shine in Division 1. The list of top goalscorers also included Bavarian United SC‘s Buran Heini, Czarni Jaslo‘s Brandon Dolezal, who played a pivotal role in helping his team escape relegation, champions RWB Adria‘s Zahkar Shkidchenko, and another Chicago House AC star, Nico Williams.

Meanwhile, in Heartland Conference Division 2, Morais Lee of AFC Roscoe emerged as the top goalscorer, driving AFC Roscoe to success in their debut season. His goals were pivotal in helping the team secure promotion to Division 1 as division champions. Reflecting on his achievement, Lee said, “I’d like to thank Adam for creating a team with purpose. That gave me a drive to perform at my highest.” Lee’s outstanding performance this season sets the stage for an exciting future as he leads the charge in Division 1.

Morais Lee’s competition for the top spot in Division 2 included Rockford FC’s Waleed Shaibi who finished with 8 goals followed by Edgewater Castle FC‘s Jake Krueger, and Green Bay Glory‘s Osvaldo Ramirez, who also helped his side earn promotion to Division 1 next year.

The 2024 Heartland Conference season was filled with excitement and drama, with these top goalscorers leading the charge. Their individual performances, coupled with the support of their teammates, made this season one to remember for fans across the region. As the dust settles, anticipation builds for what the 2025 season will bring, with these players and others looking to leave their mark once again in the MWPL Heartland Conference.

Editor’s Note

A previous version of this post listed Rockford FC’s Waleed Shaibi as the leading goalscorer in Heartland Division 2 with 8 goals, and included Morais Lee (AFC Roscoe) with 7 total goals in the 2024 season. After receiving an updated game report, it was determined that Morais Lee scored an additional 2 goals and finished as the top goalscorer in the division, with 9 goals.

RWB Adria Clinches Heartland Conference Division 1 Title with 2-1 Victory Over Chicago House AC

In a thrilling finale at Fire Pitch (Chicago, IL) on Saturday night, RWB Adria Chicago emerged victorious over Chicago House AC with a 2-1 win, securing the 2024 Heartland Conference Division 1 championship. Both teams entered the match with aspirations of clinching the title, but it was RWB Adria who triumphed, marking a historic achievement for the club.

WHAT AN ENDING TO THE SEASON

House needed to win by two, but Adria wasn’t going to let that happen. Congratulations to @rwbadria on adding a Heartland Conference title to their trophy cabinet 🏆🥳 pic.twitter.com/ounbAMhJc0

The atmosphere was electric as Chicago House AC, needing a win by at least two goals to snatch the championship from Adria, started the game strongly. Dominating the first 30 minutes, their efforts were rewarded in the 33rd minute when AR Smith capitalized on a set piece to give Chicago House the lead.

However, RWB Adria, far from panicking, showed their resilience and tactical acumen. Just before the halftime whistle, they leveled the score. A poor pass from the Chicago House AC goalkeeper was intercepted, and a sublime effort from outside the box found the back of the net, bringing the score to 1-1 at the break.

The second half saw RWB Adria seizing their opportunity. In the 57th minute, a handball inside the box by a Chicago House defender resulted in a penalty for Adria. With nerves of steel, the Adria player executed a perfect Panenka, putting his team ahead 2-1. The remainder of the match was fiercely contested, with Adria’s defense holding firm against a determined Chicago House AC attack.

With this win, RWB Adria not only secured their first-ever Midwest Premier League conference title but also capped off a season of remarkable consistency and performance. The Chicago-based club, a founding member of the Midwest Premier League, had finished second in their conference in each of the three previous seasons.

A jubilant RWB Adria team manager, Ante Loncar, expressed his happiness after the match. “We have finished 2nd twice and lost the title on goal difference before. We were first the whole year this season” Loncar said. “It feels great considering how much work we put in, being one of the original five clubs that founded this league. You know, starting a new league is not easy; you got ups and downs, you got happy moments and sad moments. I feel like my baby is just starting walking, and I am on cloud nine. We played very sexy football too, we deserved it.“

This championship game marks the end of a successful 2024 Midwest Premier League season, concluding with the following champions: Cedars FC (Great Lakes Conference), RWB Adria Chicago (Heartland Division 1), AFC Roscoe (Heartland Division 2), and Cedar Rapids Inferno (Gateway Conference).

AFC Roscoe clinches 2024 Heartland Conference Division 2 Title with thrilling win over Green Bay Glory

AFC Roscoe has secured the 2024 Heartland Conference Division 2 title follo wing a thrilling 4-2 victory over Green Bay Glory this past weekend. The match, held at Green Bay Glory’s home ground, saw goals from Lyndon Hu, Morais Lee (twice), and an own goal, sealing the win for the Chicago-based club.

Photo: Piotr Maziuk

The game was highly anticipated as both AFC Roscoe and Green Bay Glory had already earned promotion to Division 1 earlier in the season. This final match determined the Division 2 champion in what was the first year for both clubs in the Midwest Premier League. Notably, these promotions mark the first ever in the Midwest Premier League after the league established a promotion/relegation system this year in the Heartland Conference. This milestone is a significant step in the league’s 2030 plan, which includes implementing promotion and relegation for the league as a whole.

AFC Roscoe’s President Adam Nijhawan expressed immense pride in the club’s achievements. “I am incredibly proud of everyone in the club. Every player played their part in our success this season. This all would not be possible without the hard work Tommy Bender, Connor Kirkbride, Bryan Watherhouse, and Pietro Mozzone have put in all year to build a platform for success,” he stated.

The club’s recent success is a continuation of their impressive form, having won the Greater Chicago Soccer League back-to-back before joining the Midwest Premier League in 2024. “We have now won three league titles in three years, and we do not plan on stopping anytime soon. We hope to use this recent success to take our club to the next level. We have a great group of players, and I am very excited to see how the club develops in preparation for next season,” added the President.

Looking ahead, both AFC Roscoe and Green Bay Glory will face greater challenges in Division 1 next season. They will compete against well-established clubs such as Chicago House AC, RWB Adria, and Bavarian United SC. As the clubs celebrate their promotion success, the focus now shifts to preparing for the next season and continuing their trajectory of success. The future looks bright for AFC Roscoe and Green Bay Glory, and their fans have much to look forward to.

Steel City FC becomes the first ever relegated club in the Heartland Conference

Photo: Miles Whitworth

In a dramatic and heart-wrenching match, Joliet, IL-based Steel City FC became the first team ever to be relegated from the Heartland Conference to Division 2 after a 2-1 defeat to Czarni Jaslo. This historic game determined the fate of both clubs, as they were tied in points with only two games left in the season. The winner of this match would likely secure their Division 1 survival, given that head-to-head points are the league’s primary tiebreaker.

The match was a true battle for survival, with both teams fighting fiercely to maintain their position in Division 1. Steel City FC appeared to be on the path to victory when Tre Adams scored in the 74th minute, giving his team a crucial lead. The Steel City fans were on the edge of their seats, hoping that their team could hold on for the win.

However, the tide turned in the final minutes of the game. Czarni Jaslo, the Heartland Conference champions of 2023, displayed their resilience and determination by scoring two incredibly late goals. The equalizer came in the 87th minute, and the decisive goal followed shortly after in the 91st minute, breaking the hearts of Steel City FC and their supporters.

The echoes of the final whistle brought with them the somber reality of relegation.

The relegation of Steel City FC marks a significant moment in the Heartland Conference history. The club’s journey this season has been filled with challenges, and despite their efforts, they could not avoid the drop to Division 2. The unexpected involvement of Czarni Jaslo in the relegation battle, especially after their championship win last season, added an extra layer of intensity to this critical match. Earlier this year, the league implemented a two division Heartland Conference in 2024, assigning one relegation spot and two promotion spots in this first season, as plan of the league’s 2030 Plan.

Ivaldo Basso, Steel City FC Chairman, reflected on the match and the broader implications for the league, stating, “Semi-professional soccer won tonight. When the final whistle blew, one end of the field erupted in elation while the other slumped to a low somberness. Pro/rel did that. Historically, a late season game between two bottom teams would be a pedestrian exercise. Kudos to the MWPL brass for boldly pushing pro rel.

As Steel City FC prepares for their new chapter in Division 2, they will undoubtedly reflect on this season’s lessons and aim to return stronger and contest for a promotion spot next year.

Former Chicago House AC head coach Matt Poland joins USL1 expansion club FC Naples

Former Chicago House AC (Heartland Conference) head coach Matt Poland has today been announced as the new head coach and sporting director of FC Naples, an expansion team in USL1.

Poland became Chicago House AC’s head coach in January 2022, having previously been an assistant coach to CJ Brown during Chicago House AC’s season in NISA. Over two and a half seasons at the helm of the Midwest Premier League side, he led the team to an impressive 21-10-5 record in all competitions. One of Poland’s most notable achievements was guiding Chicago House AC through a remarkable US Open Cup run in 2023, defeating the Milwaukee Bavarians and the USL1 side Forward Madison, before facing and eventually falling to MLS’s Chicago Fire.

Remember this guy? Everyone at Chicago House is so happy to share the news that USL 1 side FC Naples has just announced that Matt Poland will lead the team in their inaugural season as the head coach and sporting director. Congratulations, Matt! 🧡🖤💚 pic.twitter.com/1uUJe7Jykj

— Chicago House AC (@ChicagoHouse_AC) July 17, 2024

Chicago House AC had already announced Poland’s departure on May 31st, indicating his move to a professional side. The confirmation of his new role at FC Naples marks a significant milestone in his career. Spencer Pappas was appointed as the head coach of Chicago House AC and the club currently is one point away from the top spot held by Bavarian United in the Midwest Premier League’s Heartland Conference Division 1, underscoring the team’s continued strength and competitiveness.

Adnan Bašić: MWPL Midseason Whiparound

Good afternoon, my name is Adnan Bašić, and welcome to the second-ever Midwest Premier League whiparound!

We’re a bit past the midway point of the MWPL season, which makes now a great time to take a look around the league and take stock of what’s going on. There’s been some good from teams, some bad, and some really intriguing results.

What exactly are those results? Let’s find out.

A tour of the standings

Before we get into the storylines and narratives, we’ll see how each conference is shaping up at the moment.

(All results as of July 11th)

The Gateway Conference sees Cedar Rapids Inferno ahead of the rest, as they’ve picked up five more points than AFC Columbia with one less game played. There’s three teams from St. Louis all hanging around in midtable, with St. Louis Stars SC, Club Atletico Saint Louis, and Ajax St. Louis separated by only three points. The bottom sees Pearl City Soccer Club and Southeast Soccer Academy fighting to avoid the last spot in the standings.

The Great Lakes East Conference is a real battle at the top. Michigan Stars Semipro sit two points ahead of Thundercats FC at the top, who themselves are only two points ahead of Troy United FC and Cedars FC. On the opposite end of the table we have Ypsi Yetis FC, who have just a single draw to their name this campaign.

The Great Lakes West Conference has two teams above the rest. Northern Indiana FC have been perfect this season, winning all eight of their games so far, with a dominant +22 goal differential ahead of this afternoon’s matches. They’ve not been able to pull away, though, as 1927SC have won all but one of their games, setting up a tasty title race. Indy Boyz FC are the basement dwellers here, losing each of their matches.

It’s a similar story in the Heartland Division 1 Conference. Bavarian United are narrowly ahead of Chicago House Athletic Club, with a three point lead and one more game played, but Chicago does own the tiebreaker between the two. This conference has relegation, and the fight to avoid the drop is a thrilling one, with Czarni Jasło, Dekalb County United, and Steel City all tied on points at the moment.

Photo: Miles Whitworth

The Heartland Division 2 Conference, as a result, has promotion. The current favorite for that is AFC Roscoe, who sit in 1st place following a strong run of results. Green Bay Glory is on their heels, though, and they could go top themselves if they take advantage of their game in hand. Holding down the fort here is Strikers Fox Valley SC, with one point from eight contests.

Alright enough of the facts and figures, let’s get some quotes from the teams themselves.

Catching fire

One of the most impressive teams in the league this year has been the aforementioned Cedar Rapids Inferno, who are very likely to win the Gateway Division. Up five points with only three games left to go, they pretty much just need a single point to lock up the title.

While they did finish in a solid 2nd place last time around, a new generation of players have helped them make that next step forward.

Photo: Nathan Porter

“There’s usually a lot of college egos when you bring in those players, but we have had none of that this season,” said club owner and head coach Kenan Malicevic. “No one thinks they’re above anyone else here, and it’s not usually like this. We have a hardworking group of guys, they work for each other, and they celebrate each other. It’s been remarkable to watch and they’ve been a joy to coach.”

Fans would be right to assume that the smart thing to do is bring in younger players, but while that’s usually true, getting those players to perform is a lot harder than it seems. They’re still in the process of learning about what it’s like to be a soccer player on and off the field, and they sometimes lack the maturity needed to grow.

That’s why the coaching they receive at that stage of their career is so important.

“I’ve treated them as professionals, I don’t treat them as youngsters,” said Malicevic. “The only way for them to improve is to have them train for the level they want to be at. That starts with standards, and the standards here are high, in terms of what time practice is, to what they wear during practice, to having the right behavior during practice. It’s all translated onto the field.”

You can’t forget about the old guard, though.

“We have a solid mix of guys that have been here and fresh new blood that are just out of high school. Our returners have been my right hand men out there. We don’t really have assistants like that, so the old guys have been role models in their own ways,” said Malicevic. “They lead on and off the field, they work hard, and they’re always supportive even if they don’t play. They are welcoming to the new guys. It’s all translated to hard work in practice, and then they all want to win when it’s gametime.”

Just like for Spain at Euro 2024, this mixture of young and old seems to be a winning formula for the Inferno.

Northern perfection

There are only two perfect teams in the MWPL this campaign, and the only team to have played and won more than six in a row in Northern Indiana FC, who are a remarkable 8-0-0.

It’s a stellar start for the debutantes, and the key to their success has been getting everyone on board and on the same page.

The perfect season so far is credit to our community support. Everything we’ve done has been intentional when it comes to collaboration,” said club director Omar Gallo. “Myself, fellow director Thiago Pinto, and our president Pablo Rodriguez all have the same vision, as do our board and community partners. If the vision is clear and concise, it makes the players’ and coaches’ jobs easier. From a playing standpoint, the coach has done a great job of managing the players when it comes to training and playing, creating an environment that allows our guys to be successful off and on the pitch. Each session the guys enjoy themselves, they stay competitive, and they hold each other to a standard which translates to our games.”

They’ve been winning these games in some style, scoring 29 goals and only conceding 7. That has seemingly set them up for a clear run to the division title.

However, they’ve not clinched anything just yet. The bad news for Indy is that they’ve got competition right on their heels, with 1927 sat only three points behind in 2nd since they’ve won seven out of their eight contests.

Photo: Chris Robotham

1927SC is having a great season, and credit goes to their entire club. Having them right behind us every week is exciting because it creates a challenge for our players. “This ties in to one of the reasons why we’re also having success. Them being behind us motivates our players to want more,” said Gallo. “It creates a great experience for the entire league to have two teams battling up until the last day!”

The two sides will face off on the final day on July 17th, and that’s looking like it’ll be an absolute classic.

Proper relegation scrap

Chicago House Athletic Club are in pole position to win the Heartland Conference’s top division, which would be the first title in club history.

“There’s a long way to go. This is a tougher road because of the two-tier system,” House president Peter Wilt told me. “There’s no easy games. Last year there were some teams at the bottom of the table that made things easier, but this season every game is a battle. Being able to be in the running at the top is a credit to the coaches and the players.”

However, the more intriguing battle is at the other end of the table. There are currently three teams tied for last place, with them being Steel City FC, DeKalb County United, and Czarni Jasło. This fight to avoid the wooden spoon would be interesting in any division, but it’s especially exciting in a division that features relegation, where the team that does end up in last will be sent down to Division 2.

That has added a real pressure to every contest, and it’s set the stage for a hell of a battle.

“We are aware of our position in the table and quite honestly we are disappointed in the results at this point in the season. For whatever reason things haven’t clicked like the past few years but that’s the game. We will come up short of our preseason goals but we’ve shifted our mindset now to survival in the first division,” said DeKalb president John Hall. “We aren’t afraid of the fight. Our players and coaching staff are hard at work to get the results we need over these next few weeks. I’m personally thrilled that the MWPL has backed the two division system so we have the chance to worry about these things. Now we just have to get the job done. As they say ‘ball don’t lie.’ So it’s time to show that we deserve to stay up.”

“We had a slow start to the season, so there was that worry early on. Our mentality is that we’re focusing on one game at a time, and we aren’t really scared or afraid of getting relegated,” said Brandon Camacho. “I think our communication has improved, the team is a lot more open with each other and together, and that is a credit to our head coach. We’re still growing as a club, implementing new things every day.”

Most fans would be really surprised to see Czarni Jaslo down here, as they were the winners of the Heartland Conference last year. However, it seems like the club has suffered from their previous success.

“One significant factor is last year’s success, where we won the MWPL Hartland Division, the Illinois State Cup, and numerous tournaments. This recognition led to our players receiving offers from professional clubs or teams that provide financial incentives, resulting in key players leaving,” said vice president and head coach Maciej Orlowski. “Additionally, our status as reigning champions has made us a target, with every team aiming to defeat us. Even teams with no chance of winning the championship circle our team on their schedule because we are the team to beat.”

“Avoiding relegation is crucial for the club, as remaining in the premier division ensures better sponsorship deals and attracts quality players eager to compete against top-tier competition. It also maintains the club’s prestige and helps us appeal to top players and coaching staff,” said Orlowski. “Relegation could lead to financial instability, loss of fan support, and a prolonged struggle to regain top-tier status, especially given the quality of teams in the lower tier.”

The final stretch of the season is going to be huge, as no one wants to become the MWPL equivalent of Hamburg.

La remontada de Rockford

AFC Roscoe lead the way in the second division at the moment, with fellow newcomers Green Bay Glory right behind them.

“I’ve learned a lot about how willing our guys are to step up to the challenge, and I’m very proud to see it all come together,” Roscoe president Adam Nijhawan told midwestpl.com. “We started as a Sunday league team, and to see the level of commitment now is incredible. We showed a lot of mental toughness to rebound from our start to the season, we put our heads down and kept working, and the results showed that, it shows the character of the team.”

However, the most interesting storyline involves the team in 4th place. That would be Rockford FC.

For those who have paid attention to the MWPL in recent years, you’ll know about the team’s struggles. Things were especially bad last season, as they were dead last in a 10-team Heartland Division, only picking up two points and ending with a shocking -39 goal differential.

That’s changed this time around. While they won’t have enough to seal promotion, they’ve still amassed a remarkable 13 points, with four wins on the campaign. Their goal differential is only at -3 now.

What’s been the catalyst? Internal competition.

“As with any program or company, when you have no competition, you don’t bring the best out of people cause there’s no need to perform. What we did this year was develop our U23 program, thus creating an internal battle for spots in the first team,” said club president Samir Romero. “That created a major need for players to develop, create goals, and push themselves to the next level.”

Taking on a challenge like that, especially after an awful season for the first team, was always going to be a risk. Fortune tends to favor the bold, though.

“That’s the scary part. With a new developmental program, you don’t want to overdo things. We thought we would’ve taken steps forward before, but we took steps back. Our goal was always to develop the program. The worst thing you could do at that point is try to over-expand, but the reality was that we needed that revolt and that different view to push the first team,” said Romero. “We knew the U23’s were the answer to grow further and we took that leap of faith. The biggest worry was not having enough players for the season, but we knew if we had better performances and did more for the players, then they’d be more likely to stay.”

This quick turnaround has put Rockford in a much better position for the future, and they don’t plan on going backwards again anytime soon.

“At some point we’ll have to stop thinking about growth and development and focus on the now, but we still have room to grow,” said Romero. “The dream has always been to have a girls team, but that might have to wait a little longer. We’d love to get the community involved, get the players involved in the community and not just have this be a summer program, but a year long team. That’s for later, though.”

Cedar Rapids Inferno crowned 2024 Gateway Conference champions

In a dramatic showdown, the Cedar Rapids Inferno secured the Gateway Conference 2024 championship following a nail-biting 3-3 draw against AFC Columbia. The intense match saw both teams battling fiercely, with AFC Columbia initially taking the lead just 20 minutes in. However, Cedar Rapids quickly equalized five minutes later, only for AFC Columbia to regain the advantage just before halftime, going into the break with a 2-1 lead.

The second half began with Cedar Rapids leveling the score again shortly after the break. AFC Columbia responded with another goal in the 67th minute, pushing the Inferno to the brink. But just when it seemed AFC Columbia would delay Cedar Rapids’ championship hopes, the Inferno struck back with a crucial goal in the 83rd minute, securing the vital point needed to clinch the title.

This remarkable season has seen Cedar Rapids Inferno dominate their conference, remaining undefeated and claiming the championship with two games still to play. Joining the league in its inaugural 2021 season, this title marks their first-ever championship.

Speaking to Cedar Rapids’ The Gazette, owner and player/coach Kenan Malicevic expressed his pride and determination: “We understand that what we’ve done so far is very remarkable and pretty successful for a small team from Cedar Rapids, Iowa,” he said. “We still understand there are two games to go in the season and even though we need one win to win a title, we want to go undefeated.“

AFC Roscoe Joins MWPL for 2024 Season

The Midwest Premier League (MWPL) is proud to welcome AFC Roscoe (Chicago, IL) as the latest expansion club to join the league ahead of the 2024 season.

The Chicago-based club was founded in 2021 by Zico Shaker and is led by Club President Tommy Bender. Before the MWPL, Roscoe played in the NSL Chicago (now the Greater Chicago Soccer League) and were back-to-back champions of the Chicago Division in 2021 and 2022. For the 2024 season, Roscoe will compete in the MWPL Heartland Conference.

“We are extremely excited for the opportunity to compete against top clubs in the Midwest while continuing to push towards our club goals of providing high-level play and giving back to our Chicago community. Forza Roscoe. No fear, ” said Roscoe President Tommy Bender.

MWPL Commissioner, Patrick Hodgins added, “The MWPL is happy to add AFC Roscoe to our Heartland Conference for 2024. They are a well-run club both on and off the field and will add to the quality of the clubs in Chicagoland.”

AFC Roscoe plans to hold tryouts in March. You can learn more about the club and stay up to date on their latest news by visiting their website afcroscoevillage.com and by following them on Instagram (@afcroscoevillage).

Czarni Jasło Hoist The Heartland Conference Title

The MWPL’s Heartland Conference title race was possibly the tightest of the season. Seven of the conference’s eleven clubs remained in contention for the top spot with just two matchweeks remaining.

Amidst this commotion, Czarni Jasło prevailed as the 2023 Heartland Conference Champion. The Chicago club made it to the top in its debut MWPL season, a remarkable feat when looking at many of the experienced and talented clubs that it stacked up against all season.

This includes a 3-0 win against 2022 Champion Bavarian United SC, who had lost an MWPL match since 2021. This was the beginning of an eight-game unbeaten streak that lasted from May 20 to the end of the season.

The biggest match of the season came on July 25 against Chicago City SC, who was in second place and in hot pursuit of the top spot. The match finished in a 3-3 draw, which preserved the distance that kept Czarni Jasło’s destiny in its hands entering the final matchweek.

Czarni Jasło conceded ten goals in 2023, the lowest in the Heartland Conference. This sturdy defense was supplemented by the scoring prowess Geoffroy Agboku, who finished third in Heartland scoring with seven goals.

With Bavarian United SC’s reign coming to an end, it will be interesting to witness a new era, and potentially a new MWPL dynasty.
